Last Friday, it was golden hour at Wharfside. The sound of the Rockville Band played out over the water as the fishermen's wharf caught the last light.

The tide was easy when the wharf filled up for Wharfside’s end of summer party—not a closing, just a fun night with friends and neighbors who'd normally be heading home for supper, but
stopped instead, pulled in by the smell of espresso, the first notes drifting off a Yamaha keyboard, and the promise of Stephanie Miller's cake sitting under a pile of chocolate & "coffee beans" on the dessert table.

Stephanie Miller's coffee cake anchored the dessert table — a mug of latte, piped in frosting, chocolate coffee beans scattered like they'd spilled from a roaster, and a ring of macarons, cookies, and a marshmallow-topped mug standing guard around it.

The golden hour did what it does. And somewhere between the second song and the third, one couple stopped talking and started dancing — no dance floor required, just dock boards and the last light of the day. Rockville, live off their new record played for a crowd that didn't need convincing to stick around for one more song.

Golden Hour at Wharfside

While at the picnic tables, the party split into its usual constellations —
fishermen and friends catching up under a Shipyard umbrella, a couple of iced coffees and a bottle of wine holding down the table against the breeze. This is the part of a wharf party that never makes the flyer: the standing conversations, the borrowed chairs, the low sun turning everyone gold for twenty minutes before it disappeared behind the shingled rooftops. Off to the side, a quieter conversation, with the whole working harbor —moorings, floats, and all — laid out behind. And holding court, a dog or two tried to make sense of it all!

This marking of the end of summer neighborhood party is a Wharfside hallmark: easy and welcoming. Not a booming presence so much as a ‘choose your own adventure” kind of coffee shop.
